Stepping Into The New Year -Strategies For Early Childhood Directors

Cross roads

As the new year unfolds, early childhood directors find themselves at a crossroads of emotions and responsibilities.

For some, the return from a long summer break brings a mix of anticipation and trepidation, while others, nearly a month into the year, may already be encountering familiar challenges amidst fresh beginnings.

It's normal to oscillate between feeling invigorated by the prospects of new children and families joining your service and feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of your role.

Questions like "Am I the right person for this job?" or "Can I navigate the challenges ahead?" are not uncommon. These reflections are a sign of your deep commitment to your role and the impact you wish to make.

The Power of Reflection

Before you dive headlong into the year, I encourage you to pause and reflect. In my work with early childhood leaders, a valuable exercise is to "look back before moving forward." Assess what strategies succeeded last year and which ones didn't. Identify what truly inspired you and consider what you're moving away from. This introspection is crucial for setting a clear and motivated path forward. For more details about this powerful exercise, contact Sarah Moore.

Conscious Leadership

Conscious leadership is about being the change you wish to see in others. It's about leading with empathy, resilience, and a deep understanding of your own needs and those of your team.

Remember, "Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge." – Simon Sinek. This quote underscores the essence of early childhood leadership – it's about creating a supportive and thriving environment for all. (Including you!)

Building Your Support Network

As an early childhood leader, recognizing your support needs is as important as addressing those of your team and community.

Ask yourself, "Who is on my support team?" and "What support do I need to thrive?" Identifying these resources early on can empower you to meet the myriad demands of your role more effectively. This way, you are modelling to your team what you want them to do.

Take a Moment to Reflect and Plan

Engage in a simple self-reflection exercise to gain clarity and set an emotionally flexible path for the year ahead.

Ask yourself:

  1. What were my biggest wins last year, and what did I learn from them?

  2. What challenges did I face, and how did I address them? What could I do differently moving forward?

  3. What are my key goals for this year, and what support do I need to achieve them?
